Rust Thread Stripe Area Rug, Rust & Natural
Rug size guide
The most common rug mistake is buying one that is too small. This guide helps you choose a size in feet and inches, room by room, before you order.
How to choose, in 30 seconds
- Go bigger than you think. A rug should connect the furniture, not float in front of it.
- Living room: an 8′ × 10′ with at least the front legs of every seat on the rug. Choose 9′ × 12′ to put all legs on.
- Dining room: the rug should reach 24 to 30 in past the table on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.
- Bedroom: let about 9 to 24 in of rug show at each side of the bed. A queen bed usually takes an 8′ × 10′.
- Hallway: choose a runner 8 to 12 in narrower than the hall, which leaves 4 to 6 in of bare floor on each side.
- Not sure? Mark the rug on your floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day.

Standard rug sizes in feet and inches
Sizes are nominal, which means the rug may differ from the listed size by a small amount. Each product page lists the sizes available for that rug, and not every rug comes in every size.

*Room size that leaves about 18 in of bare floor on every side of the rug. A little less works in a small room, and a bit more looks calmer in a large one.
Living room
Choose the layout first, then the size. The rug's long side runs in the same direction as the sofa. Keep the coffee table fully on the rug, and keep every leg either fully on or fully off it, because a rug edge that cuts through a leg can make furniture wobble.

All legs on
Every leg of the sofa and chairs sits on the rug. The most settled look, and it needs the largest rug.
Front legs on
The front legs of every seat rest on the rug. It suits most rooms, and the rug runs at least 6 to 8 in under the front of each piece.
Floating
No furniture touches the rug. We do not recommend it for most rooms, because it tends to make the space feel smaller.

| Sofa width | Front legs on | All legs on |
|---|---|---|
| 6′ (72 in) | 5′ × 8′ (12 in each side) or 6′ × 9′ (18 in each side) | 8′ × 10′ (24 in each side) |
| 7′ (84 in) | 8′ × 10′ (18 in each side) | 9′ × 12′ (30 in each side) |
| 8′ (96 in) | 8′ × 10′ (12 in each side) | 9′ × 12′ (24 in each side) |
| 9′ (108 in) | 9′ × 12′ (18 in each side) | 10′ × 14′ (30 in each side) |
| 10′ (120 in) sectional | 9′ × 12′ (12 in each side) | 10′ × 14′ (24 in each side) |
| 11′ (132 in) sectional | 10′ × 14′ (18 in each side) | 12′ × 15′ (24 in each side) |
Measure the longest run of your sofa or sectional. For an L-shaped sectional, include the chaise in the width and make sure the rug reaches under the front of every section. The rug's depth, measured from the wall toward the room, should reach under the front legs of the sofa and chairs. Treat these sizes as a starting point and tape-test them first.
Leave about 18 in of bare floor between the rug and the walls where you can.
Dining room
Measure the table, then add 48 to 60 in in each direction. That puts 24 to 30 in of rug on every side.
A chair needs room to slide back when someone sits down or stands up. If the rug stops short, the back legs catch on the edge. Match the shape of the rug to the table where you can: a rectangle under a rectangular table, a round under a round one. Low or flat pile is easier for chairs to slide over.

| Seats | Table size | Rug at least | Suggested rug | Rug beyond the table |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 seats | 48 × 36 in | 96 × 84 in | 8′ × 10′ | 36 in at ends, 30 in on sides |
| 6 seats | 72 × 36 in | 120 × 84 in | 8′ × 10′ | 24 in at ends, 30 in on sides |
| 8 seats | 96 × 40 in | 144 × 88 in | 9′ × 12′ | 24 in at ends, 34 in on sides |
| 10 seats | 108 × 42 in | 156 × 90 in | 10′ × 14′ | 30 in at ends, 39 in on sides |
| Seats | Table | Rug at least | Suggested rug | Rug beyond the table |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 to 4 seats | 36 in across | 84 in | 8′ round | 30 in all around |
| 4 seats | 48 in across | 96 in | 8′ round | 24 in all around |
| 4 to 6 seats | 54 in across | 102 in | 9′ × 12′ | 27 in on every side |
| 6 seats | 60 in across | 108 in | 9′ × 12′ | 24 in on every side |
| 8 seats | 72 in across | 120 in | 10′ × 14′ | 24 in on every side |
Table sizes vary, so measure yours. A round or square rug at least as wide as the "Rug at least" figure also works under a round table. Round and square sizes above 8′ are not available on every rug, so check each product page.
Bedroom
Center the rug on the bed, starting about 24 in down from the head of the bed, so roughly the lower two-thirds of the bed sits on the rug. Then check how much rug shows at each side. That is where your feet land in the morning. Keep the same amount on both sides so the layout looks balanced.

| Bed | Mattress | Good fit | Roomier fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38 × 75 in | 5′ × 8′: 11 in each side | 6′ × 9′: 17 in each side |
| Twin XL | 38 × 80 in | 5′ × 8′: 11 in each side | 6′ × 9′: 17 in each side |
| Full | 54 × 75 in | 6′ × 9′: 9 in each side | 8′ × 10′: 21 in each side |
| Queen | 60 × 80 in | 8′ × 10′: 18 in each side | 9′ × 12′: 24 in each side |
| King | 76 × 80 in | 9′ × 12′: 16 in each side | 10′ × 14′: 22 in each side |
| California king | 72 × 84 in | 9′ × 12′: 18 in each side | 10′ × 14′: 24 in each side |
Reveal per side = (rug width - bed width) / 2. Use your mattress or frame width, whichever is wider. Another option is a pair of 2′6″ × 8′ runners, one along each side of the bed, which keeps the foot of the bed on bare floor.
Entryway and hallway runners
Leave 4 to 6 in of bare floor on each side and at each end of a runner.
Measure the hall's width and length, then subtract. A runner 8 to 12 in narrower than the hall leaves 4 to 6 in on each side. For length, take 8 to 12 in off the hall to leave 4 to 6 in at each end. Check that every door still opens and closes freely over the runner. Inside a front door, a 3′ × 5′ rug works as a mat, and a 5′ × 8′ suits a roomier entry.

| Runner | In inches | Fits a hall this long | Fits a hall this wide |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2′6″ × 8′ | 30 × 96 in | 8′8″ to 9′ (104 to 108 in) | 3′2″ to 3′6″ (38 to 42 in) |
| 2′6″ × 10′ | 30 × 120 in | 10′8″ to 11′ (128 to 132 in) | 3′2″ to 3′6″ (38 to 42 in) |
| 2′6″ × 12′ | 30 × 144 in | 12′8″ to 13′ (152 to 156 in) | 3′2″ to 3′6″ (38 to 42 in) |
Home office, nursery and kitchen
| Room | Starting sizes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Home office | 5′ × 8′ or 6′ × 9′ | The desk chair, pushed back from the desk, should stay on the rug. Let the rug run 24 to 30 in past the back edge of the desk. A low pile lets a chair roll more easily. |
| Nursery or kids' room | 3′ × 5′ to 6′ × 9′ | Place it beside the crib or bed, or under a play area. Read each product page for materials and care. A rug pad can help keep a rug from shifting. |
| Kitchen | 2′ × 3′, 3′ × 5′ or a 2′6″ runner | Keep the rug clear of cabinet, dishwasher and oven doors. Choose a size that lets you pull out a drawer or open a door without moving it. |

How much of the furniture should be on the rug?
- Front legs on (the usual choice): the rug runs at least 6 to 8 in under the front of the sofa and chairs, so the front legs are fully on it and the back legs stay on the floor.
- All legs on: every leg sits on the rug, with the rug extending past the furniture on all sides. This takes the largest size and looks the most settled.
- Keep each leg fully on or fully off. A rug edge that runs through the middle of a leg can make furniture rock.
Rug pads, doors and thresholds
- Pads: a pad can help keep a rug from sliding and adds a little cushioning. Whether a pad suits a particular rug is noted on the product page when we know. Choose a pad slightly smaller than the rug on each side so the edges lie flat.
- Doors: open each door all the way over the spot where the rug will lie. A thicker rug, or a rug with a pad, needs more clearance. If a door catches, choose a lower pile, a smaller rug or one that stops short of the swing. Pile height is on the product page when it is known.
- Thresholds, vents and hearths: keep the rug off floor vents, and away from a fireplace hearth.

How to measure and tape-test
- Measure the room. Write down the length and width in feet and inches, and note any doors, vents and stairs.
- Measure the furniture. Note the width of the sofa or bed, the size of the table, and where the legs fall.
- Mark the rug on the floor. Use painter's tape in the exact rug size, or lay out sheets of newspaper. Try the next size up as well.
- Live with it for a day. Walk through the room, pull out the chairs, and open the doors. See which outline connects your furniture best.
- Compare with the size list. Pick the nominal size from the table above, then check the product page for the sizes available.
Buying a large rug: 8′ × 10′ and up
- Larger rugs are heavy and arrive rolled in a long box. Plan a clear path from the door to the room, and plan on two people to carry and unroll it.
- Delivery: shipping and delivery details are on our Shipping & Returns page.
- When it arrives: check the box and the rug right away. If something is damaged or is not what you ordered, contact us promptly with your order number and clear photos.
- Returns: please read the return terms on Shipping & Returns before you order. Because a large rug is bulky, it is worth tape-testing the size first.
Placement note. Our placement guidance is based on traditional feng shui principles. In that tradition a rug anchors a room, a bedroom is kept balanced with the same rug on both sides of the bed, and an entry is kept clear and welcoming. This is cultural tradition and design inspiration, not a rule, and we make no promises about outcomes. See The Calm Home for more.
